Interesting tyre(s) selection you’ve gone for there mate, I know skinnies are all the rage... seems like you’ve got every base covered :)

Heh, they’re temp tyres just to get the chassis rolling.

300, we were able to get it in before they really started cracking down on them.

I’m pretty interested in doing a 300 or 200 but without a turbo to start. What trans and transfer case does it have? Did you change the rear end gears?

It’s mated to a R380 and 3.54 gears in the front and rear but there exist adapter plates for Series transmissions. IIRC the max torque you can send through a Series layshaft is around 120 lbft so it’s something to consider and also the 300Tdi engine mounts are different than the 2.25/2.5 N/A/200Tdi so you’d have to cut and move them to fit if you want to put a 300Tdi in.

Yeah, I’m leaning towards a 200DI, Stumpy R380, LT230. Not sure about what rear end gearing would best be suited, probably like 1.4 gearing for the LT230. My transmission and transfer case aren’t in the best shape, but I would consider a full synchro series 3 trans, rebuilt of course. Is all that wiring all for the engine? Are you running a stock transfer case? I’d much prefer the easiest bolt in swap, which seems to be a 200DI then maybe add the turbo later if needed.

We have a Disco LT230 bolted onto the back with 1.21 gearing and we still have to do the wiring (right now it’s still the old wiring).

How much cutting and fabrication was required for all that? Is it full time 4WD?

Quite a bit actually, all the mounts have to be moved and you have to cut a chunk out of the cross member underneath the gearbox otherwise the prop shaft fouls up on it. Regardless of engine (2.5N/A/200/300) you are going to have to cut the battery mount off and relocate the battery.

More pics to give you a better idea on how it sits, although I’m not sure why I didn’t get a shot of the cross member that needed to be cut.

The 2.5 N/A will require the least amount of modification but at the same time it’s a 500 lb boat anchor and not much better than what you have now.

Edit: Also, yeah the axles are disco axles so no more freewheel hubs.

Oh wow. Ok that doesn’t seem too terrible, but that’s probably a project for a later date. Where did you source the engine and drivetrain parts from?

Engine is from a wrecked Defender in England, axles are from a local scrap yard that had a couple of D1's lying around. However since ICE has cracked down on Defenders 300Tdi’s are ludicrously expensive.

Ok, Maybe this one will be chalked up with the Santana Trophy. Hoping to do that some day, that trip will definitely include a lot of parts shopping. Now I guess a nice tune up is due, and basic maintenance for now. Thanks for all the info!
